    What is Ophthalmic Pathology?

This is a rarely found sub-specialty. Ocular pathologists specialize inthe microscopic tissue diagnosis of ocular conditions once tissue isobtained surgically and sent to the laboratory for analysis. These specialists make a tissue diagnosis based on specimens from the cornea, conjunctiva, eyelids, retina/vitreous, intraocular and orbital tumors, phakomatoses, lens, congenital anomalies, and optic nerve.

    Ophthalmic
Ocular pathologyis the discipline within hospital pathology departments or private department that deals withthe microscopic diagnosis of tissue specimens of the eye or parts ofthe eye.
Such specimens include the conjunctiva, orbit, lacrimal gland, lacrimal drainage system, optic nerve, vitreous, and the whole eye. These lesions can be benign or malignant. The most common cancersdiagnosed are retinoblastoma (cancer of the retina) in children, or choroidal melanoma in adults for example.
Often there are cases in which the final diagnosis should be made apathologist who has had specialized training in the field of ocular pathology.

I m  happy to receive ocular pathology consultations from pathologists: microscopic slides for consultation,as well as whole eyes (in formalin) for gross and microscopic interpretation.
